Tell us about your family…
We’re Sam and Jack. Sam works in the creative industry and Jack works in hospitality. We’re based in the South west with our little boy Patrick and our 2 dogs. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Exeter.
How was your pregnancy?
I was very lucky to have a smooth and relatively comfortable pregnancy. We were both very excited learning about what was happening with my body and the baby as the weeks progressed and preparing for his arrival.
Where did you have your baby?
Labour ward, it was actually really great care and we felt supported throughout!
How was your birth?
While we hoped for a somewhat low intervention birth, things didn’t quite go to plan and we found ourselves having an emergency Caesarean. We definitely hadn’t looked into the recovery and process enough in the lead up because we didn’t want to think about needing one, but in reality I think it’s best to look at all possibilities even if you don’t think it would happen!
How did you keep comfortable?
Breathing techniques were so so helpful in slowing down time and giving me a minute to mentally prepare 5/5.
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
In Shock!!! I had convinced myself I was having a girl but ultimately it’s okay to be a bit in shock or need to take a minute to process it’s a huge moment.
How were the early days with your baby?
Feeding was a huge thing for us – in our experience newborns sleep way more than we thought so sleep wasn’t a concern. But we had real trouble feeding.
What has been your top triumph?
Baby is happy and healthy and regardless of the way he was delivered he is safe and sound!
What has been your top challenge?
Learning how to feed your baby – it’s a skill and not necessarily an instinct.
What has been your proudest moment?
When my baby was back at birth weight and I knew breast feeding was going to be a success!
One thing you weren’t expecting…
Difficulty with latching.
How have your HPHB group supported you?
The group were lovely!
Most useful hospital bag item…
Frida mom boy shorts! I promise they are worth the hype.
What was your best post-birth treat?
Sushi!
Most useful baby item…
Ready meals delivered to our door!
What was your most useful gift?
Baby sling / carrier.
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Communication is key with your partner, always remember you’re a team!
