A positive vaginal delivery: Arlo’s birth story

I had an uncomplicated pregnancy and felt well and healthy throughout. I educated myself as much as possible about both the physical elements of birth and also what might happen if things didn’t go to plan. I love a lot of information and the HPHB course really helped with that.

My birth was very quick, which left few options for pain relief. I had my first contraction at 8:30AM and Arlo was born just after 4PM! I arrived at Newham Birthing Unit at 11AM and was 2cm dilated, however they kept me in as my contractions were strong and close - by 1pm I was fully dilated. I found the pain quite overwhelming and unfortunately the gas and air made me feel disoriented. The breathing techniques taught during the course were really helpful as Rich was able to talk me through them and remind me. I also found the HPHB different professional sessions so helpful as I had a really clear idea of what was happening to my body throughout the birth.

The first time that I saw Arlo I was just amazed that there was actually a baby! I’m not sure how real it all felt until he was here and safe and I was holding him.

During the early days with Arlo I felt really informed which was great, so I knew how my body would respond post birth and I had a good idea about breastfeeding and baby care. I had a lot of support from friends and family as well who have small children or babies which was fantastic as well as breastfeeding support from my midwife.

I would recommend the HPHB antenatal course - we loved the individual professionals brought in for the different areas and feel reassured that there is a support network there if we need it

Top Tip:

Be informed, be aware of all your options and possibilities but don’t be too married to any one scenario - you don’t know how your birth or baby will be so try to go with the flow.
