Tell us about your family…
Hello. We are Anna & Anthony with newest addition Louie. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Battersea.
How was your pregnancy?
Our pregnancy was very smooth and the course gave us the tools to prepare for birth and the initial stages of parenthood. It also created a community for us of people who are all going through the same thing at the same time.
Where did you have your baby?
Chelsea & Westminster.
How was your birth?
I had a liver function issue at 38 weeks and so was induced. I had a vaginal birth with forceps.
How did you keep comfortable?
5/5 breathing techniques this had the biggest impact at many different stages.
3/5 epidural only because it wore off twice but it did help in the long run.
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
Shocked, it still blows my mind that our bodies create such beautiful, perfect babies. Having him safely in my arms was amazing and I was just so pleased to meet him and know we had a little baby boy.
How were the early days with your baby?
We ended up in the special care unit due to jaundice and our baby was not able to suckle so could not breastfeed at first so needed help feeding. We stayed for a week. The course helped with recovery from birth and what to expect and the day for hormones dropping.
What has been your top triumph?
Getting our baby home from NICU and now 2 months on after sticking to pumping and feeding we are exclusively breastfeeding with a healthy baby who can latch and drink a lot. Something in the first week I did not think would be possible.
What has been your top challenge?
Returning home without our baby – we knew he would come home but that heartache for the baby you carried everywhere for 9 months, coming out and not being with you or in your arms and connected by tubes was one of the toughest moments of our lives.
What has been your proudest moment?
Sticking at pumping to make sure my milk supply increased even though my baby could not feed from me and now being something of the past.
One thing you weren’t expecting…
Labour.
How have your HPHB group supported you?
It has been amazing to have a group all having the same milestones and feelings that we can openly chat about and we are good at meeting up weekly whoever can make it so that there is a date to stick to and not feel alone.
Most useful hospital bag item…
Sound proofing headphones and a neck pillow the labour ward is tough through the night.
What was your best post-birth treat?
At home manicure and pedicure along with a cheese and wine box from a friend was amazing.
Most useful baby item…
At home manicure and pedicure along with a cheese and wine box from a friend was amazing.
What was your most useful gift?
Baby bath the little one loves it and such a nice thing to see them so relaxed.
Baby sensory black and white book he loves and focuses on it for a long time.
Baby Bjorn bouncing chair very easy to move around the house and when they start to not want to be lying down is great.
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Understand feeding patterns and amounts. Prepare for breastfeeding to not work straight away. It takes time, but get help within the first 24hrs in hospital and if you need to express. Nothing is a failure, it is an adaptation to you all being happy and healthy.
