A positive Caesarean birth: Jenny and Martin’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

We are Jenny and Martin and we are parents to Mya. We attended the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Newcastle.

How was your pregnancy?

We did our third round of IVF and were finally successful after a couple of failed attempts and a miscarriage. Due to this I was very careful throughout the pregnancy and appreciated every scan to see how my baby was growing. As she was small and as I had gestational diabetes, we had scans every two weeks. I ate the most random food options to keep my blood sugars low (cheese slices, parmos, expensive low sugar protein bars and no cereal!). I had morning sickness until the third trimester. I also had SPD. I thought I would go swimming more, exercise and be generally healthier however never had enough energy!

How was your birth?

Due to IVF and gestational diabetes I was due to be induced at week 38. We arrived at hospital at 38+1 at 5pm and had the gel at 11pm when I was already 1cm dilated. My waters were broken at 7am and by 8am I was having contractions. I used gas and air for pain relief. However later that morning I started having heavy bleeding so was taken for a C-section.

How did you keep comfortable?

Breathing techniques 4/5
Gas and air 5/5

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

Relief that she was here and she was perfect and full of love.

How were the early days with your baby?

I was in hospital for 5 days following the C-section and as Mya had jaundice. Feeding was challenging especially when I couldn’t get out of bed.

What has been your top triumph?

Persisting to breastfeed and being successful.

What has been your proudest moment?

Creating a healthy happy baby.

One thing you weren’t expecting

Breastfeeding difficulties.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

Overwhelming support. We meet up regularly. Everyone had breastfeeding challenges so it has been a comfort to know I am not alone.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Baby clothes.

What was your best post-birth treat?

Cake and weetabix.

Most useful baby item…

We got a lot of gifts from a family friend including the floor play mat, moses basket and swing. All very helpful. But most useful gift was saline nasal spray and calpol!

What was your most useful gift?

Vests, full body suits and sleep sack.

One final tip for other expectant parents…

Be prepared and have a good group of friends to talk to.
