Tell us about your family…
Hello. We are Chantel and Alex, a Practice Coordinator and a Gas Engineer and 6 months ago became the proud parents of Rafe! We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in York.
How was your pregnancy?
I didn’t enjoy pregnancy so much and struggled with morning (all day) sickness until I was about 22 weeks, had a sweet spot over Christmas then spent every night not being able to sleep until birth. I struggled with anxiety and panic attacks and found that HPHB helped with this as well as it covered Hypnobirthing, but also I could speak to others in the class and didn’t feel alone.
Where did you have your baby?
Rafe was born via C-section surrounded by a wonderful clinical team.
How was your birth?
Due to the anxiety, we elected for a C-section which felt controlled. It was hands down, the best thing for me and was a wonderful experience. I was able to prepare a birth plan, requested delayed cord clamping, asked for the Vitamin K injection and chose the option for Rafe to be dealt with first so we could have uninterrupted skin to skin whilst listening to our playlist in a relaxed manner. I was made aware of all that I could opt for from attending the HPHB classes.
How did you keep comfortable?
Breathing techniques helped me immensely prior to the spinal block along with great support from my husband.
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
It was such a surreal moment and one I’ll never forget! I also felt a sense of relief as I could breathe again.
How were the early days with your baby?
We are now settling into life as parents, and are grateful for the support HPHB gave us! Feeding, nappy changing etc, it’s all alien to first time parents!
What has been your top triumph?
Getting to six months with a healthy and very happy baby!
What has been your top challenge?
Post C-section recovery is hard but not as bad as some make it out to be! I also found it hard not being able to do mundane tasks that I could do before.
What has been your proudest moment?
Giving birth! I never thought I could do it.
One thing you weren’t expecting…
We weren’t quite expecting to feel the feeling of immense joy as much as we do, it is so overwhelming……on a good day!
Any regrets?
We have no regrets at all!
How have your HPHB group supported you?
I have come out of HPHB with a wonderful group of friends and a fabulous support network! For myself as a first time parent, this has been amazing!
Most useful hospital bag item…
Got to be a long charger and a fan! Those rooms are hot hot hot!
What was your best post-birth treat?
Rafe was born the day before Good Friday so for me, Easter eggs!
Most useful baby item…
A snot sucker!
What was your most useful gift?
A bath seat!
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Enjoy every second and take all the birth photos.
