Tell us about your family…
Hi. I’m Bryony and am a proud mum to non-identical twin boys! I went on the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Epsom.
How was your pregnancy?
My pregnancy wasn’t easy with twins. I suffered with nausea for the first 20 weeks but felt much better after I got over that hurdle. My tummy was huge by the end and I was very ready to meet my boys! These were our first kids so the course gave us the weekly forum to ask any questions about caring for babies and post c-section recovery. It was beneficial to meet like minded people too who we have met since for walks and support!
How was your birth?
My birth was unexpected – the boys were 6 weeks early as I was admitted to hospital with severe pre-eclampsia and had an unplanned C-section on the same day. To be honest I was relieved to have a c-section despite planning potentially for both scenarios (vaginal or C-section) but it was a sudden scary time. I knew I was in the right place to be cared for and it was good to know the symptoms I was feeling were beyond the norm for pregnancy! My birth bag was semi ready and we had thrown it on the bed in preparation just in case when we went to hospital so that someone could grab it for us if we needed it!
How did you keep comfortable?
Breathing techniques helped me keep calm during the procedure despite having a dangerously high blood pressure! My partner stroked my hair and hands too which helped with anxiety. I had a spinal so couldn’t feel anything below my chest. The feeling was dreamy to be honest – I didn’t mind it at all!
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
We felt elated when we saw our babies. Twin 1 was shortly wheeled away in an incubator as he needed help breathing but we knew he was in the best hands. I had skin to skin with Twin 2 which was magical.
How were the early days with your baby?
Our babies were both in neo natal for 3 weeks which was so tough mentally. We needed to lean on each other and the staff for support – it’s important to remember that your babies are receiving the best care from passionate professionals who do this day in and day out. We made sure to do as much skin to skin as possible during those weeks.
What has been your top triumph?
Completing our first week at home with the babies felt like an achievement! And so was going to the doctors for our appointments.
What has been your top challenge?
Having patience while the babies were in neonatal. We were desperate to have them home, but babies learn and grow on their own schedules.
What has been your proudest moment?
Taking the boys home from hospital.
How have your HPHB group supported you?
Our group is so supportive! We meet up on a weekly basis for walks / coffee so everyone can drop in when they want. They help me feed both twins while I have my hands full!
Most useful hospital bag item…
My neom travel diffuser! I was in hospital for a week so that felt like a little bit of luxury from home in my hospital room.
What was your best post-birth treat?
Wine!
Most useful baby item…
Nappy bin!
What was your most useful gift?
Our nubi rapid cool to make formula on the go!
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Don’t worry too much about a fixed birth plan. It’s best to be open minded about all eventualities so that you’re not too stressed or disappointed.
