Tell us about your family…
Hello. We are Ria and Jonny. Jonny works in Finance and Ria in Marketing. We couldn’t wait to meet baby Wilfie and to have adventures together as a family. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in East Dulwich.
How was your pregnancy?
Pregnancy was tough, I had severe nausea well into the second trimester and by the time it passed, I was into the exhausted 3rd trimester phase. I really missed my bodily autonomy and there were so many things I couldn’t do now (some inexplicably e.g foot massage?!). The cherry on top came with the August heatwaves at 36- 38 weeks. H&M wide legged trousers sized up got me through.
Where did you have your baby?
St Thomas’ – really lovely. Clean, great staff, great views.
How was your birth?
Birth was great. I had an elective C-section and am very happy with my choice. We looked into the data and made the decision that felt right for us. Being elective, recovery was very quick. Given the stigma around C-sections, I was grateful that HPHB broached the topic in a neutral, non judgemental way. As did my trust – St Thomas’. We think and talk about birth a lot but more of the conversation and energy focus needs to be meaningfully on what comes after as that is far more enduring and challenging.
How did you keep comfortable?
During the C-section pain relief was 10/10. Lucid and no pain.
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
In awe, relieved and elated.
How were the early days with your baby?
The first week a lot goes on but you’re in your lovely new born bubble so the chaos is manageable. Sleepy day 1, inconsolable day 2, cluster feed day 3. Limited sleep and first time actually using these things (sleep bag, nappies, steriliser).
What has been your top triumph?
Getting to the point where I can consistently, effectively soothe was a game changer. Getting the knack of the sling, witching hour ending. Smiles!
What has been your top challenge?
Settling baby, sleep deprivation, watching him struggle trapped wind/gas, reflux, witching hour.
What has been your proudest moment?
Smiles!
How have your HPHB group supported you?
The HPHB group has been great in the postpartum period. It’s reassuring to know the challenges are not unique to us.

Yes it is hard, but you’re doing great. Be kind to yourself. You can’t control it. Ask for help, accept the help. This too shall pass.
