A positive Caesarean birth: Katie and Harry’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hello. We are Katie and Harry, baby Theo and our cat Chase. Katie is a solicitor and Harry works in marketing. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Fleet.

How was your pregnancy?

My pregnancy was pretty smooth until near the end when I was sent for growth scans and tested for gestational diabetes (it was negative but the baby was big!) I was so excited for baby to arrive but also quite anxious not knowing if everything would go ok. I kept quite active in pregnancy which I think helped. It was great to do the classes and meet others in the area all going through the same thing.

Where did you have your baby?

Frimley Park Hospital. I had a very positive experience. The staff were lovely and so helpful.

How was your birth?

I chose to have a C-section as I wasn’t keen on an induction. I was worried about my baby not being safe and that felt like the safest way. I never went into labour although my C-section took place after my due date. It was all very smooth and efficient but I found the breathing techniques helpful to keep me calm as I was nervous. It was such an incredible feeling. I remember it but wish I could relive that moment over and over.

I requested to have the curtain lowered for when he was lifted out and seeing him there for the first time I was so emotional. I think I just let out a strange noise as I just didn’t know what to say! And I cried. I couldn’t believe he was actually real and here and he’d been growing inside me all that time.

How were the early days with your baby?

I think I was in a bit of a daze and it all went so quickly. At first it’s so new but you pick things up really quickly. It helped having been to the course as it meant things felt slightly more familiar. I was breastfeeding and it meant I knew a bit more about what to expect with feedings.

What has been your top triumph?

I think starting swimming classes when he was 6 weeks old. I was nervous to go but it’s so lovely seeing him enjoy the water and as the lessons have gone on he’s started smiling and now picking up toys and playing with them.

What has been your top challenge?

I’ve found it hardest when he’s had wind/gas which makes him upset and trying things to help but it not making a difference.

What has been your proudest moment?

Probably taking him to a wedding for the first time, he was the only baby and it was like he was a VIP! He got so much attention and he was so good all day, it was a lovely occasion.

One thing you weren’t expecting

How much I would ache each morning! I don’t think I was ever warned about that. My arms, hands and back ache all the time now from carrying him and feeding.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

They’re such a lovely group and it has helped so much since Theo was born. We have a WhatsApp chat for the mums and we share activities we’re going to do and advice and have had lots of meet ups. It’s so helpful having a group with babies over the same age range.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Probably my giant water bottle.

What was your best post-birth treat?

A pack of Boost bars, they tasted so good.

Most useful baby item…

Next to me crib from his great grandma.

What was your most useful gift?

Changing table! I got one that has two big drawers and cubby holes at the top. I use the drawers for his clothes and it’s so handy having other space for his bath stuff and all the changing bits like nappies and wipes, muslins etc.

One final tip for other expectant parents…

I would say try not to be too rigid and go with the flow. That makes things a lot less stressful. And if you want to try something, like a baby class, then go for it. I’ve found them a great part of my routine and stop me and baby getting bored at home! They also tire him out which helps him sleep!
