A positive Caesarean birth: Gemma’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hello. I’m Gemma and I’m mama to Owen who is now 8 weeks old. I took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Knutsford.

How was your pregnancy?

Overall, I really enjoyed being pregnant! It’s such a magical time and I was fascinated by all the ways it changed me. I had a lot of chronic pain throughout but it prepared me for the lack of sleep I now get as a parent to a new baby!

Where did you have your baby?

In hospital. I would have loved a home birth but this wasn’t an option for me.

How was your birth?

I was advised to have an induction before 40 weeks due to my age, and so I elected to have a C-section instead if I got to that point. I missed having the opportunity to go into labour but I felt empowered in the choices I’d made. The hardest part was all the waiting on the day.

How did you keep comfortable?

I needed tools to keep comfortable during the time waiting for my C-section. I found knitting helped with the waiting to keep my hands busy! In theatre, I found grounding touch, calming presence, and having my own music playing were all 5/5.

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

Relieved!

How were the early days with your baby?

It’s almost impossible to remember all you’ve learnt in those first days when you’re recovering, and so there’s a lot of asking family, friends, and Google! It comes back though and you also learn to trust your instincts.

What has been your top triumph?

Surviving these first 8 weeks.

What has been your top challenge?

The times when I put my baby down to sleep and they wake up again, over and over.

What has been your proudest moment?

Walking out of the hospital to take my baby home.

One thing you weren’t expecting

The monotony of it all at first – it feels like a Groundhog day of bottles and nappies and not much else.

Any regrets?

Not having more support in those first weeks led me to do too much and delay my own healing.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Snacks for after the procedure!

What was your best post-birth treat?

My first bath.

Most useful baby item…

Home cooked meals.

What was your most useful gift?

Nuby rapid cools!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

Do all of the spontaneous things you can whilst you can leave the house easily!
