A positive Caesarean birth: Amy’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hello. I am Amy. I am a special needs teacher and mother to Amelie as a solo mum. I took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Haywards Heath in July 2025.

How was your pregnancy?

My pregnancy was pretty straight forward (after several rounds of IVF to get there) and I was excited to meet my little girl. I continued with exercise so other than feeling tired I was in fairly good shape. HPHB gave me ideas of how to tackle the birth and gave me time to discuss plans with others in the same boat.

Where did you have your baby?

PRH Haywards Heath.

How was your birth?

My birth was not how I thought it would be. I ended up having an emergency C-section. However I did manage to use some of the techniques for example the breathing techniques during labour and kept a positive mindset throughout using advice from the course.

How did you keep comfortable?

Breathing techniques – 4/5
Gas and air – 5/5
TENS – 3/5
Epidural – 4/5

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

I was still in shock from the birth but I instantly fell in love with her. She was all I ever dreamed of.

How were the early days with your baby?

It was tough due to recovery but I used my knowledge of persevering with feeding and also keeping her safe in her cot.

What has been your top triumph?

Breastfeeding with bottle top ups which I very easily could have given up with at the beginning but I was determined to give her the best I could.

What has been your top challenge?

Recovery with a newborn on very little sleep.

What has been your proudest moment?

When she smiled for the first time it made it all worth it!

One thing you weren’t expecting

The C-section recovery.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

It was great to have a What’s App group where we could all connect and support each other both pre and post birth. Knowing that there are others going through the same thing and where you can ask each other for advice. We meet up regularly for coffee and a chat.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Birthing comb.

What was your best post-birth treat?

Chocolate.

Most useful baby item…

Practical support from friends in the first few weeks.

What was your most useful gift?

Muslins.
Snot sucker.
Babygrows with zips!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

Plan for all eventualities in birth. Know that this is only for a short time and once your little one is here it is so worth it!
