A positive Vaginal birth:  Anika and Ramoha’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

We are Anika and Ramoha. Anika works at a railway company trying to convert their diesel and petrol vehicles to electric, and Ramohan works in HR as a senior manager for an airport. We are parents to the beautiful Baani Bhogal, who blessed our world on the 31st July, we are truly in love! We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Bedford.

How was your pregnancy?

I was very lucky with my pregnancy, I did not suffer from sickness, mainly just tiredness! I loved my body more than I ever had and enjoyed each milestone! I did get diagnosed with gestational diabetes which was tough for a sweet tooth but you’d do anything for your baby!

Where did you have your baby?

Bedford Hospital.

How was your birth?

The birth was emotional but I would do it again in a heartbeat! I truly understood the meaning of your birth plan being more of a preference as it didn’t go to what I had planned. I wanted a calming water birth with music and affirmations, but I suddenly went from 2cm to 8cm in 10 minutes, so I was quickly rushed to the delivery suite. I had an induction and stitches but I felt okay with that as my baby girl entered the world safely.

How did you keep comfortable?

Breathing really helps you focus – 5/5

Birthing comb- 4/5 – helps relief some pressure, I didn’t have time for anything else!

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

Relief that the labour was over and that my baby girl was safe and in my arms. Also disbelief that I had birthed this perfect little person!

How were the early days with your baby?

Hard! I don’t think anything could have prepared me for understanding how much your life changes in an instant. The course was great for helping us understand her needs.

What has been your top triumph?

Breastfeeding, I feel lucky to be able to provide for my little girl! Knowing I am able to bond with her and provide her with what she needs is a blessing.

What has been your top challenge?

Adjustment, I think not doing the simple things as easy anymore is hard, brushing your teeth, having a  shower, just leaving the house. But it’ll get easier and it’s all part of being a new family!

What has been your proudest moment?

Getting out the house, from week 5 we attended sensory classes and exercise classes and it was tough but has gotten easier!

One thing you weren’t expecting

When people mention you won’t sleep, they never really talk about why – the witching hour, the sleep resistance, the 2 hour wake ups, the no longer being sleepy, the daily sleep changes!

Any regrets?

I wish I had prepared myself more physically, it’s tough on the body!

How have your HPHB group supported you?

Massively, I have had their support through day and night and go to classes and meet up with them, it’s amazing to go on this journey with others.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Your birthing partner 100%! I had nothing with me, not even clothes or my phone ha, but my husband got me through every single second and I didn’t need anything else!

What was your best post-birth treat?

Chocolate and orange juice! Having gestational diabetes as a sweet tooth was hard, but my midwife gave me cold orange juice as soon as my labour was over, it was the best thing I’d ever tasted! Cold, refreshing and sugary, just what I needed after labour!

Most useful baby item…

Baby play mat, it’s great, she loves it, and gives us somewhere to lay her and play with her.

What was your most useful gift?

Owlet! It gives us a piece of mind at night!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

It’s hard, harder than you can ever imagine, but it’s sooo worth it and you’ll get through it!
