Tell us about your family…
We are Abby and Michael. Abby works in finance and Michael is a product designer. We are parents to baby Hattie and cats Kingsley and Indie. We attended the classes in Horsham.
How was your pregnancy?
My pregnancy was pretty smooth sailing – had some morning sickness in the first and third trimester, and low blood pressure dizzy spells, but nothing out of the ordinary. The hardest bit was the exhaustion – pregnancy is more tiring than parenting!
Where did you have your baby?
In a delivery suite with a birthing pool – like a delivery/birthing centre hybrid.
How was your birth?
I loved my birth experience, luckily it went mostly to plan although I did get out the birthing pool for an epidural which was the only deviation, and so pleased I did. I had great support from my partner and midwife which got me through. The doctors were concerned Hattie’s heart rate was dropping and wanted to intervene but we got her out and it was such a huge relief to have her earth side and healthy.
How did you keep comfortable?
Breathing techniques 4/5 until the transition period
TENs machine 4/5 until active labour
Pool 3/5
Gas and air 1/5
Epidural 5/5
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
Relief and proud of myself! I thought she was so beautiful.
How were the early days with your baby?
We were in the hospital for the first few days as we struggled to latch for breastfeeding. The lack of sleep is tough but we were adrenaline and love fueled. The course gave very helpful information on recovery, breastfeeding, and to trust your instincts.
What has been your top triumph?
Persisting with breastfeeding and keeping a positive mindset.
What has been your top challenge?
Breastfeeding and anxiety about recovery.
What has been your proudest moment?
Soothing Hattie when she’s upset (especially when no one else can)
One thing you weren’t expecting…
How noisy babies are when they sleep!
How have your HPHB group supported you?
The mums chat regularly – its so helpful having women in the same position so we can share experiences and advice. Its also nice to have other mums to get out the house with.
Most useful hospital bag item…
Adult nappies!
What was your best post-birth treat?
Salmon sushi and wine.
Most useful baby item…
A big bag of snacks for breastfeeding and homemade lasagne.
What was your most useful gift?
Bouncer.
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Take it one day at a time and don’t overthink the conflicting advice (everyone has something to say!), just do what feels right and safe for you and your baby.
