A positive Caesarean birth: Rebecca and Joe’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hi. We are Rebecca and Joe. We both work in insurance and are parents to baby Mia and our dog Luna. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Stoke Newington.

How was your pregnancy?

I had a straightforward pregnancy with nausea in the early weeks but no sickness. Physically I felt good for the first two trimesters until I developed pelvic girdle pain in the third trimester then very uncomfortable generally towards the end! HPHB helped with learning about the different stages of labour, the birth bag and baby essentials checklists and hypnobirthing techniques which helped us feel more prepared.

How was your birth?

Our baby was breach so we ended up opting for a C-section. Hypnobirthing techniques were still applicable. For instance, preparing a playlist to distract us and completing our birth preferences for a C-section in case it was necessary.

How did you keep comfortable?

Water 4/5 provided the most pain relief at home.
Gas and air 4/5 for pain relief once at hospital
Breathing techniques 3/5 helped having something to focus on.

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

Relieved she had arrived safely.

How were the early days with your baby?

Difficult due to recovering from a C-section but all the content around feeding and sleeping was very helpful. I was particularly glad I had harvested colostrum before she arrived.

What has been your top triumph?

Successfully breastfeeding – it was difficult to begin with as both you and the baby need to learn but it is worth it if you can.

What has been your top challenge?

Surviving the first few weeks of sleep deprivation.

What has been your proudest moment?

Being able to make her smile and comforting her when she is upset.abc

One thing you weren’t expecting

Babies can reject the bottle if you introduce it too late, all the advice was against introducing it too early.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

All the advice and late night questions in the early weeks and having local friends in the same boat.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Labelled bags!

What was your best post-birth treat?

A nice shower gel.

Most useful baby item…

The pram!

What was your most useful gift?

Zip up sleepsuits!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

It does get easier!
