A positive Caesarean birth: Nikki and Nick’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hi. We are Nick and Nikki. Nick works in telecoms and Nikki in finance. We are parents to our adorable baby son Oliver and our two ragdoll cats, Meg and Minnie. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Surbiton.

How was your pregnancy?

I had a tough pregnancy with sickness most of the way through. This made me look forward to the birth even more! The HPHB course was really helpful in making us feel prepared for all eventualities and knowing what to expect.

How was your birth?

I ended up having a C-section after an induction. Although not what I was hoping for, the birth itself couldn’t have gone more smoothly and the recovery was much faster than I anticipated. My husband had made me a labour playlist so we played that during the C-section which was calming, and just his presence by my side was very reassuring as I was quite nervous going into it. Given how smoothly the c section went in an ideal world I would have elected to have it and skipped the induction process, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

In awe. It was just such a magical moment! And thankfully someone in the theatre captured it on camera for us, a memory to treasure.

How were the early days with your baby?

A complete whirlwind! Sleep was a major challenge, particularly because I was already exhausted having spent 3 nights in a noisy hospital during the induction. Support from my husband and parents was invaluable.

What has been your top triumph?

Breastfeeding. I established it fairly easily and enjoy it so much, it’s such a lovely bonding experience with my baby.

What has been your top challenge?

Without a doubt, the lack of, and broken sleep!

What has been your proudest moment?

Seeing Oliver for the first time and hearing that we had a healthy baby boy.

One thing you weren’t expecting

Such a quick recovery from the C-section – I was up and walking the same day.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

It’s been great to have the support network – from the humorous stories on the WhatsApp chat to the brunches, baby classes and other events, it has helped give a sense of solidarity. At a BYOB (bring your own baby) comedy gig recently the compere asked if everyone had come along with their purchased friends – it’s true but super helpful.

Most useful hospital bag item…

High waisted pants.

What was your best post-birth treat?

An iced coffee.

Most useful baby item…

Frozen COOK meals!

What was your most useful gift?

Lots of muslins!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

Go into the birth process open minded, and post birth, just listen to your baby, they’ll tell you all you need to know!
