Tell us about your family…
Hello. We are Georgia and Dave, and are parents to Luke who is five months old, we also have two cats Luna and Ozzy. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Hemel Hempstead.
How was your pregnancy?
Good. We were excited about making a new community through HPHB for whilst I was on maternity leave, and also to understand the basics on what to expect during and after birth.
Where did you have your baby?
We had a C-section in the hospital.
How was your birth?
We opted for a planned C-section, as I had worries about vaginal birth. It worked really well for us where we are planners! We were able to book the day that we wanted when I was 39 weeks pregnant, and use the weekend before to get the house ready and make sure everything was in order. On the day of the C-section, we were told when we were going to be called up and made comfortable whilst we waited. Everyone in the room was extremely friendly and made me and my partner feel at ease. There were a lot of people there, but everyone was always checking I was okay, and any issues or concerns they reassured me and checked that I was doing okay.
The whole process from starting to having the baby in our arms took 20 minutes, and they will tell you as much or as little information as you want whilst they are doing it. We left the following day after the surgery, I felt very sore but was assured that everything looked neat and I was ready to go home with the baby! All in all I would do it again and if anyone is worried about going through a vaginal birth, it’s important to know that there are other options to make you feel comfortable.
How did you keep comfortable?
The breathing techniques helped while I was waiting if I was feeling a bit nervous. The epidural that I had prior to the surgery was really effective and helped me manage the pain over the hours after birth.
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
It is a very out of body experience! You feel an instinct that you want to look after them, hold them, make sure that they’re okay. Everyone around us who supported us during the birth was very helpful and made us feel at ease.
What has been your top triumph?
Raising a beautiful healthy baby boy!
What has been your top challenge?
Trying not to fit around a schedule. Your baby will make sure that everything is on their terms. If you feel yourself getting worked up, take a breather and remember that you may not do everything you want to do that day, but as long as the baby is happy, then it doesn’t matter.
What has been your proudest moment?
When Luke smiled at me and Dave for the first time. It was magical
One thing you weren’t expecting…
To be able to run on little sleep, and function as an adult, and a parent!
How have your HPHB group supported you?
The friends we have made as part of the course of been a great community, checking in on each other making sure that we’re doing okay has been so important especially in those first few weeks where everything is so brand-new. It’s great to meet up and see everybody’s babies flourish, and now we’re starting to get into more baby classes it’s great to have the parents to do that with as well!
Most useful hospital bag item…
A handheld fan, it’s hot in the hospital.
What was your best post-birth treat?
Wagamama‘s on Deliveroo!
Most useful baby item…
The nappy creams and ointments were life-saving at the beginning where you are changing nappies constantly!
What was your most useful gift?
Muslims, didn’t even know what they were pre-baby! But always have one over my shoulder.
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Try to chew out of the noise, every experience and baby is different. Just make sure you’re comfortable with decisions you’re making, we’re all adult adults after all.
