A positive vaginal birth: Sophie and Richard’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hello. We are Sophie & Richard. Sophie works in Defence & Space, Richard works in a law firm within the finance department. We have two cats, Oscar & Max and parents to our beautiful 3 month old baby Maisie. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Keynsham.

How was your pregnancy?

My pregnancy went very smoothly, I had no sickness and was excited for our little arrival. The thing I was most nervous about was the sleep deprivation! HPHB really helped us to make friends with people going through the pregnancy journey at the same time as us. It also allowed us to learn so many things like baby first aid.

Where did you have your baby?

Bath, RUH. They were incredible, so.supportive.

How was your birth?

My birth ended up being slightly complicated as I had forceps and heavy bleeding after. However, the hospital staff were amazing and I felt supported throughout especially having my husband right by my side. HPHB supported by informing us prior to all the different ways of keeping comfortable during the birth and what support is out there.

How did you keep comfortable?

Gas and air– 5, made me feel much more comfortable.
Epidural– 5, took the pain away.

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

Pure love and joy, couldn’t describe the feeling we have towards her. She is everything.

How were the early days with your baby?

The HPHB course gave us understanding on what soothing techniques could help for recovery post birth. I had stitches so this was important.

What has been your top triumph?

Getting through the birth.

What has been your top challenge?

Keeping on top of other daily things whilst looking after a newborn.

What has been your proudest moment?

Seeing her smile.

One thing you weren’t expecting

The soreness.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

Tips, hints and advice the whole way!

Most useful hospital bag item…

What was your best post-birth treat?

Chocolate, of any kind.

Most useful baby item…
