Tell us about your family…
We are Demi & Scott, Demi is a psychologist and Scott is an engineer in the Royal Navy. We met in High School and have been together ever since! We are parents to Harris (4 months) and our lovely Springer Spaniel Alba. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Glasgow.
How was your pregnancy?
I had a really smooth pregnancy with no symptoms at all! We loved hearing our healthy boys’ heartbeat at our midwife appointments. My pregnancy became a little complicated in the last few weeks. I was sent for a scan at 37 weeks querying the baby being breech, however he was in the perfect position but measuring very big. After discussing our options we chose to have a planned C-Section. I also developed Bells Palsy at 38wks which was very frightening but we were quickly put at ease thanks to our amazing NHS staff.
Where did you have your baby?
We had Harris in hospital which put our minds at ease knowing everyone was an expert in all things babies.
How was your birth?
We had an amazing C-section experience with no complications thankfully. We met with the surgeon and the anesthetist before the procedure who talked us through everything. The staff were amazing and Scott was able to stay with me the whole time. Once Harris was born and had his checks he was placed on my chest for skin-to-skin and was able to stay there for the rest of the procedure. We even got to play our own music which was lovely.
How did you keep comfortable?
Breathing 4/5 – helped me stay calm and still while having the spinal tap.
Spinal tap 5/5 – didn’t feel a thing, didn’t have any side effects and was completely painless having it done as they give a numbing injection first.
How did you feel when you first met your baby?
The wave of emotion is completely indescribable. Scott and I both instantly burst into tears and were so happy to finally meet our baby boy.
How were the early days with your baby?
The HPHB course gave me the confidence to discuss our options and ask lots of questions when we discovered that Harris was measuring big. Becoming a mum is the best feeling ever but it does come with a lot of worries, the HPHB course provided me with the skills and knowledge to feel confident in caring for Harris in those first few weeks.
What has been your top triumph?
My top triumph is just how happy Harris is. He smiles at everyone and we’ve even had our first giggles!
What has been your top challenge?
The sleep deprivation. Everyone talks about it but nothing can really prepare you.
What has been your proudest moment?
I’m so proud of the team that Scott and I make, we’ve really supported each other through this whole process.
One thing you weren’t expecting…
Everyone warns you about the first poo but it’s actually more like the first 5 poos that are like tar!
Any regrets?
No regrets. Our birth plan was to do what was best for Harris and that’s what we did.
How have your HPHB group supported you?
Our HPHB friends have been amazing! Our group chat is full of questions/advice/baby photos. We have a big monthly meet up and then coffees/walks/cinema trips in-between, so grateful to have them all!
Most useful hospital bag item…
Nintendo Switch, it kept us distracted in the few hours we were waiting to be taken for the C-section.
What was your best post-birth treat?
A can of monster and a glass of wine!
Most useful baby item…
Baby essentials basket with nappies, bubble bath, baby calpol etc and quick meals we could just pop in the oven.
One final tip for other expectant parents…
Try not to watch or read negative birth stories online, it is possible to have a lovely experience.
