A positive Caesarean birth: Hannah and James’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

We are Han and James. Han is a performing arts teacher and James is an insurance broker. We are parents to 3 month old Ezra Dennis. We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Guildford.

How was your pregnancy?

My pregnancy was a bit of a rocky journey. I was filled with anxiety during the first trimester, and a few complications with my liver and platelets in the second trimester added to my worries. But by the third trimester, thanks to the incredible support and expertise of the Happy Parents Happy Baby course, my anxiety eased, and my excitement grew. Despite the tiredness, I couldn’t wait to meet our baby boy.

Where did you have your baby?

Royal Surrey – they were amazing!

How was your birth?

I started with an induction but there was no progress, and my hopes for a water birth quickly went out the window. Thanks to the Happy Parents group, I felt prepared and knew what to expect, which really helped calm my nerves. It all happened so quickly — we agreed to the C-section at around 10:30, and our baby was born at 11:34. I was upset that we couldn’t stick to my birth plan, and combined with the lack of sleep, it all led to a few hysterical tears. But once I wrapped my head around it, the excitement took over — I just couldn’t wait to meet Ez.

How did you keep comfortable?

Netflix 5/5 – kept me going in the days of failed induction techniques.
Gas and air 0/5 – made me feel sick I couldn’t use it.
Pethidine 5/5 – I loved this , it was the strongest pain relief I used during labour.
Shower 3/5 – helped me feel normal and was very relaxing.
Breathing 5/5 – got me through the hormone drip (if you know you know!)

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

I was instantly in love the moment I saw my baby. I couldn’t believe the pregnancy was finally over (very relieved — I can’t say I loved it!), and I was in awe that I’d grown such a big baby — 9lbs 1oz, and I’m only 5’3″! I couldn’t wait to love him forever.

How were the early days with your baby?

The first few days were tough. We went out every day — I’m still not sure if we were brave or crazy — but it helped bring a sense of normality. It was a heatwave, which made keeping the baby cool a bit stressful, and we ended up sleeping downstairs for the first week. The baby also had his tongue tie cut on day five. But even with the challenges, that little newborn bubble in those early days was truly magical.

What has been your top triumph?

Baby sleeping through, 10:30-6:30, from being 6 weeks old!

What has been your top challenge?

We’re having real struggles with reflux and so Ezra throws up pretty much constantly , piles of washing build up and it can be overwhelming.

What has been your proudest moment?

I think my proudest moment was pushing baby round town the day after I was discharged (he was 3 days old) it was lovely to push the pram and welcome him to our life.

One thing you weren’t expecting

I was not expecting to be so awake the first night we had him ! I didn’t feel the need to sleep , partly anxiety, partly excitement. It definitely was detrimental in the long run and sleep eventually took over night 2.

Any regrets?

I regret being so worried about not sticking to my birth plan.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

We have met up loads , we see each other at least once a week and have a group chat to share the highs and lows.

Most useful hospital bag item…

Frida Mom postpartum everything!!!

What was your best post-birth treat?

I wanted smoked salmon and a glass of whispering Angel! James very kindly brought them.

Most useful baby item…

I’d say the most useful gift we revived was the love to dream swaddles! I swear by them.

What was your most useful gift?

We couldn’t live without the Nuk perfect match bottles , it’s the only bottle baby he will take!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

What happens at 3am stays at 3am!
