A positive vaginal birth: Zoë and George’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hello. We are Zoe and George parents to Arthur (aged 3 months) and Sienna (our 5 year old cockapoo). We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Plymouth.

How was your pregnancy?

Pregnancy for me was a rollercoaster, from struggling with severe morning sickness and then having a fantastic third trimester. HPHB really helped my partner and I to connect with other couples and get ready for the arrival of our little boy.

Where did you have your baby?

Hospital, it was a mixture of moments but on the whole it was the best place for me.

How was your birth?

My birth experience was very unexpected. Despite having all the birth preferences planned and an in depth birth plan with my midwife our little one had other plans. He arrived 10 days early and was definitely in a rush, my labour only lasted 11 hours of which only 45 minutes was spent pushing. I had prepared my body for labour and so despite it not going to what I had originally planned, my body was definitely ready and so fortunately I didn’t have a long recovery.

How did you keep comfortable?

I found breathing techniques, gas and air and trying various UFO positions helped the most, as my little one was back to back during labour.

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

In awe, I didn’t realise how much I was already going to love him instantly.

How were the early days with your baby?

I gave birth during a heatwave so it was quite tough. We had lots of support. The best thing from HPHB was the feeding information.

What has been your top triumph?

Breastfeeding.

What has been your top challenge?

The sleepless nights.

What has been your proudest moment?

When he did his first proper smile.

One thing you weren’t expecting

How different nappy brands are!

Any regrets?

During labour not asking them to examine me more often.

How have your HPHB group supported you?

I still meet up with some friends and that connection has made everything so much easier, especially when they start doing something and you can check how others have coped with it.

Most useful hospital bag item…

For me: my peri bottle.
For my partner: the pringles.

What was your best post-birth treat?

Cups of tea from the midwife (especially when our little one cluster fed the entire first night).

Most useful baby item…

Our travel white noise machine.

What was your most useful gift?

Dummy (even though people try and make you feel guilty for using one).

One final tip for other expectant parents…

Don’t stress if things don’t go exactly to plan!
