A positive Caesarean birth:  Eadaoin and Michael’s birth story

Tell us about your family…

Hello. We are Eadaoin and Michael, both teachers! We took the Happy Parents Happy Baby antenatal classes in Croydon.

How was your pregnancy?

We did the online sessions which prepared us for the birth, first few months and beyond. I was most excited to see the baby after all the months of waiting, and I was most scared about the actual birth.

Where did you have your baby?

Croydon, the staff were fantastic and I was really well looked after.

How was your birth?

The birth included all the unexpected elements. I wanted to have a water birth which we got at the beginning, we then moved to Labour word and eventually ten hours later ended up with an emergency c-section. I experienced everything but was really well supported by my husband and staff. The breastfeeding was something I didn’t think I would particularly enjoy, but it has been such a fantastic thing to be able to do for my baby. I am really glad I persisted when I found it difficult.

How did you keep comfortable?

I used gas and air for the entire birth, both in the water and in the labour ward which helped me remain calm. I then had the spinal for the C-section.

How did you feel when you first met your baby?

It was the most amazing, special moment and one I will cherish for the rest of my life.

How were the early days with your baby?

It was difficult, sleep deprivation is hard and recovery in general is difficult. Remember to lean on friends and support systems and don’t be scared to ask for help. The course really helped when it came to breastfeeding and where to access support for this.

What has been your top triumph?

Overcoming my fear about breastfeeding, how it was going to feel, would I be able to manage it etc.

What has been your top challenge?

Getting out of the house – you need everything (bar the kitchen sink)!

What has been your proudest moment?

Taking my little man home and feeling love like no other.

One thing you weren’t expecting

The madness of the delivery – expect the unexpected!

How have your HPHB group supported you?

So much! We have a WhatsApp group and talk and meet regularly! It’s great to have other local mums to talk and share ideas with!

Most useful hospital bag item…

Water!!!!! Lots and lots of water.

What was your best post-birth treat?

A toastie – felt like heaven.

Most useful baby item…

A bouncer for the baby to sit in, it wasn’t something we thought about but would be lost without it.

What was your most useful gift?

Play mat, teddy, nice blanket!

One final tip for other expectant parents…

Enjoy all the madness, the newborn stage is over before you know it- and we miss it already!
